Requirements and Criteria needed for a student loan:

Important Loan Info – Read Before You Apply!

  1. FAFSA Required – You must have a completed FAFSA on file with Mt. SAC.
  2. Complete Application – Fill out all parts of your loan request; each one is reviewed individually.
  3. Minimum Enrollment – You must be enrolled in at least 6 degree-applicable credits. Dropping below 6 units = cancellation and loan repayment. Distance learners may need to submit a mid-term Work In Progress (WIP).
  4. Maintain SAP – You must be meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (status must be Satisfactory, Probation, or Warning). Suspended status = not eligible.
  5. Appeal ≠ Loan Approval – Even with an approved appeal, loans aren't guaranteed.
  6. Ed Plan Required – have completed by the counselor or educational advisor a FULL/COMPLETE Educational Plan to ensure academic goals, progress and separation/completion date of the declared major of study.
  7. Apply Online – Submit your loan request and documents through Adobe Sign via the Mt. SAC Financial Aid Office.
  8. Loan Limits – Your total aid (loans, grants, etc.) can’t go over your cost of attendance. Loan amounts may be adjusted based on new awards.
  9.  Required Online Steps – Complete:
    • Master Promissory Note (MPN)
    • Entrance Counseling (for new borrowers)
  10. Disclosure Statement – Once approved, you’ll get loan details (including payment info) from your loan servicer.
  11. Stay Updated – Check the Financial Aid tab in your Mt. SAC Student Portal for loan updates.

Mt. SAC Student Financial Aid Portal

Section 428(a)(2)(F) of the HEA permits an institution to refuse to certify an otherwise eligible borrower’s FFEL programs and Direct lending loan applications, or to certify a loan for an amount that is less than what the student would be otherwise eligible for, if the reason or such action is documented and provided to the student in writing.  This includes the authority to refuse to certify a loan application based on the institution’s belief that the student is unwilling to repay the intended loan.  This provision is effective for the loan applications certified on or after April 9, 1991.

Visit the Federal Student Aid website at https://studentaid.gov/ to complete:

  1. Sign in with your FSA ID and follow the instructions for completing each of the counseling sessions and electronic MPN.
