I have been involved in tutoring and leadership through the ASAC SI Program as an SI Leader and have witnessed the positive impact I can have on my peers by building connections. Becoming part of the academic support system that students count on to get through difficult classes has been one of my best experiences at Mt SAC. The work itself is rewarding when students share that the sessions I facilitated helped them achieve the grade they wanted. I have also learned so much from the students I have worked with.
Witnessing the positive impact I have had has inspired me as a mentor in the program to create and implement training that has encouraged our leaders to build a sense of community and camaraderie with the students they work with so the impact of our program can continue to grow. I'm so excited to see how we can continue to grow and have a positive impact on Mt SAC students. What advice would you give to fellow students about leaving a legacy?
My advice is to expand your sphere of influence without trying to build a legacy.
I did not set out in my journey with the intention leaving a legacy. I was more focused on my personal goals and obtaining the life I wanted to build for myself and my family. But as I began to work with others, I realized that opening my sphere of influence only benefitted me. I made connections with amazing individuals, have found work that is not only impactful but enjoyable for me, and I have a sense of belonging that I have never experienced before.
I did not work with a legacy in mind but rather with a sense of responsibility to do what I could to help others succeed and reach their goals. I knew that while people may not remember what I said to them, they would likely remember how I made them feel and worked towards creating good and uplifting feelings. The fact that I now have a legacy in my students and fellow SI Leaders is a byproduct of my intention to have a impact.
