Mt SAC Jazz Studies
Mt. SAC offers one of the premier community college jazz programs in the United States, with award-winning ensembles, outstanding faculty, and opportunities for students to grow as performers in a supportive and high-level musical environment.
Jazz ensembles are open to both music majors and non-music majors. Students who participate in a music ensemble may also qualify for Priority Registration, making it easier to plan their schedules and stay on track academically.
Under the direction of Dr. Walter Simonsen, Director of Jazz Studies, students develop skills in jazz style, improvisation, ensemble performance, and contemporary musicianship while performing a wide range of music.
Jazz Ensemble: MUS 47
Audition required | Intermediate to Advanced
The Mt. SAC Jazz Ensemble is a traditional big band that performs both classic and contemporary jazz repertoire. This ensemble is designed for students with strong reading skills, prior ensemble experience, and an interest in high-level jazz performance.
Laboratory Band: MUS 39
No audition required | Novice to Intermediate
Laboratory Band is a smaller contemporary ensemble that explores a wide variety of styles, including jazz, rock, funk, and Latin music. This ensemble is a great option for students who are developing their skills, returning to playing, or looking for a welcoming entry point into jazz performance.
Private Lessons
Students enrolled in a music ensemble are encourged to take lessons on their instrument by enrolling MUS 160/161A: Individual Instruction, which provides 14 hours of private lessons per semester.
Instruments
Jazz ensembles include saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, drum set, and auxiliary percussion. School-owned instruments are available for student use, while enrolled in emsembles.
