Student Learning Outcomes

Course Name: Basic Digital and Film Photography
Course Number: PHOT 10 (VOC)
Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate appropriate shutter settings for motion and freeze action, employ techniques for motion control.
  • Identify compositional elements (i.e. line, texture, shape, patterns, perspective) of a photographic image ), applying use of design elements and compositional guidelines in photographic images.
  • Select and present photographs in a presentation format appropriate to the subject (e.g. dry mounting , digital media, projection.)
  • Relate aperture settings to resulting depth of field characteristics, employ techniques for depth of field control.
  • Identify and describe the parts of a camera (i.e. lens, f/stop, shutter, etc.) and their functions, demonstrating correct use of 35mm film and DSLR cameras.
  • Students completing Photography courses will know the core skills of f/stop control. They will understand the standard f/stop values (1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22, 32) and how aperture affects exposure, and depth of field.
  • Determine correct exposure values to produce photographic images, applying use of meters for correct exposure, equivalent exposure, and bracketing.
  • Students completing Photography courses will demonstrate proficiency in shutter control. They will understand standard shutter speed settings (1000, 500, 250, 125, 60, 30, 15, 8, 4, 2, 1) and their functions, specifically how shutter speed regulates both exposure and the rendering of motion in an image.
