Motorcyclist Training Course: In-Person & Hyrbid

OVERVIEW 

The Motorcyclist Training Course (MTC) at Mt. San Antonio College is an approved California Motorcyclist Safety Program (CMSP) and training site authorized by Total Control Training, Inc. and the California Highway Patrol (CHP).  We offer both in-person and hybrid MTC’s for novice riders to the community. The in-person MTC is 6.5 hours of classroom instruction and 9.5 hours of range (on-cycle) instruction over two days. The hybrid MTC is 4-6 hours of online classroom instruction using the eRider platform (done at home on the computer) and 9.5 hours of range (on-cycle) instruction (takes place over two days).

Both course options provide fundamental street-riding skills and strategies, including but not limited to, mental aspects of riding, the physical aspects of riding, cornering strategies, machine controls, emergency breaking, and traffic interaction. 


COURSE DETAIL AND ELIGIBILITY 

To participate in this training a student must possess a valid driver's license, a DMV issued instruction permit, or a DMV issued identification card.  Students between 16-18 years of age must have a parent or guardian accompany them to the first range class to sign a waiver form. The MTC is designed to accommodate all levels of experience from the true novice to practiced riders. It is expected that participants will be able to balance and ride a bicycle prior to attending this class. Students are also expected to read the on-line reference materials (a link will be sent to students upon registering for the class) prior to attending the first day of range (on-cycle) instruction. Students are expected to wear proper attire for participation in this program, requirements will be included in the outline.

Hybrid Motorcyclist Training Course 

Students will be sent an invitation email with a unique link to set up their eRider account and access the online classroom (ensure your email is accurate). The online classroom is highly interactive, using video and other features to address risk management, riding strategy, roadway management, impairments and special riding situations like carrying passengers and group riding.  Students must complete all classroom activities (6 chapters) BY 11:59 PM THE NIGHT BEFORE THE FIRST RIDING SESSION AND SHOW PROOF OF COMPLETION TO THE INSTRUCTOR.Students must show instructor their eRider report card showing all 6 chapters were completed (printed or electronic).  Students who have not completed the online classroom will be dismissed from class. 

System Requirements 

eRider students must use a computer that meets basic system requirements. The online classroom requires a modern desktop, laptop or tablet computer; a current operating system and Web browser; high-speed Internet; and headphones, earphones or speakers. Smartphones are not recommended – they navigate poorly and do not provide adequate detail for graded activities.

COMPLETION REQUIREMENTS

Students must attend and successfully complete ALL portions of the course to receive a certificate. Students must be on time for all sessions and dressed in appropriate riding attire for the range.  Late arrivals and/or students who do not complete the training will be dismissed from the course without a certificate or refund. No refunds or transfers are allowed. We make no guarantees, expressed or implied, that you will successfully complete this training.  
 
If a participant drops from the Motorcyclist Training Course due to an emergency or other unforeseen event, such participant has up to 60 days from the original first day of class to return as a stand-by and complete the training. Anyone returning after the 60 day period will need to pay the full registration fee again. 
 
NOTE: Classes are held rain or shine. Range date and time are subject to change.  Students will be notified prior to the first day of class. 

WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR RIDING SESSIONS

  • A valid driver's license or driver's instruction permit  
  • HYBRID STUDENTS: A printed or electronic eRider report card showing ALL 6 chapters completed  
  • DOT helmet (full-face or three quarters)
  • Eye protection (visor, goggles or glasses)
  • Sturdy boots that completely go over-the-ankle (NO slip-ons or fashion boots)
  • Sturdy full-fingered leather motorcycle gloves
  • Long sleeved shirt or jacket
  • Sturdy non-stretch denim jeans (NO rips or tears)

NOTE: We provide helmets only. You are required to provide the other items yourself.

LEARNING OUTCOMES 

This course falls under the Communication, Critical Thinking and Personal and Social Institutional Level Outcomes. 

Upon completion of this course, participants will:  

  • Have the basic mental skills and understanding to operate a motorcycle.
  • Understand some of the Motorcycle riding dangers and some of the things they can do to mitigate those dangers.
  • Have basic level demonstrable skills in relation to the operation of a motorcycle.
