The Mt. SAC Honors Program commits itself to providing an inclusive and diverse academic
community. It is our belief that such an environment is necessary for the well-being
of our students, staff, and faculty members. To provide this atmosphere where all
members of our community can thrive, we strive to combat racism, sexism, homophobia,
transphobia, ableism, and the systemic forces that negatively impact marginalized
populations. It is our goal to create a community where all individuals feel welcomed,
respected, and heard.
We recognize that building this environment will not occur overnight, nor
will it happen automatically. It will take time and purposeful directed action. It
will take more than a statement reaffirming our commitment. However, we consider it
a privilege to work with our community in this ongoing effort towards equity and justice.
In this continuous endeavor, the Honors Program is taking action to address
issues and develop solutions. To review and improve our program, we are collaborating
with the various Mt. SAC Equity Programs and implementing processes, activities and
events based on those discussions to improve Honors student equity and success. Additionally,
the Honors Program is hiring a diverse group of Honors student ambassadors to provide
outreach and support. We are also supporting Mt. SAC’s chapter of the international
honors society, Phi Theta Kappa, in their equity-focused projects. Finally, because
the core foundations of our program are built upon diverse perspectives and the exchange
of ideas, we are ensuring that our Honors Center is an inclusive safe space for ALL
members of the Mt. SAC community.
